Square Foot Gardening Layout Plans
The easiest way to plan the design of your square foot gardening layout is to use either graph paper, or a computer program, even Microsoft Excel works great. Let’s just assume graph paper for the remainder of the article, and keep it simple. Sketch your yard space, and then also sketch the areas you plan to have beds, and plant vegetables in.
Here are some square foot gardening layout ideas
It is important to consider that you can only reach two feet into a garden. So, therefore, if you are going to be able to reach your garden vegetables, you have to limit the width or depth to two feet from all directions. That means that if you have a square garden, you can make it four feet by four feet, if you can access it from at least three sides. If that garden were in the corner of your property, you would not be able to access the most inner corner.
Next, let’s consider a 4 foot by 8 foot garden. In the middle of a yard, it can be accessed from each of the long sides, two feet in each direction, so you would be able to reach any part of the garden. This magic 4 foot dimension , as long as you can access both long sides, allows you to have an unlimited length to your garden. Our absolute favorite design is anything by four feet. Just make sure you have the four foot side against the fence, and you can have as big a garden as you wish. Also, keep in mind that if you are going to have multiple beds, they have to be at least three feet apart from each other at all parts. That’s the absolute minimum you’re going to need to maneuver around between them.

Once you have the big picture of the yard, and the beds, you can create a zoomed in drawing plan of each bed. Here, you likely want to use four by four (16) squares on the graph paper for each square food of garden space. On this drawing, plan your individual squares by vegetable. Use good companion gardening techniques, and check the square foot gardening spacing requirements of each vegetable. Square foot gardening layout is both the planning of the bed within the yard, and the planning of the vegetables within the bed.
